We know that Black hopes are endangered when their non-Black neighbors, friends, co-workers, and peers, remain silently complicit in the racist systems they inhabit every moment of each and every day.
Our children need to know the truth about our founding, every ugly detail of it. Only once the truth comes to light will we be able to grapple with the depth of pain racism has borne out, generation after generation.
We must call this what it is. Teach our children as well as our students to recognize these behaviors and privileges, and work to actively interrupt them wherever possible, even with a simple “I’m speaking”.
